A beloved Fresno breakfast spot, Bennaddiction, is closing its doors after a remarkable 13-year run, leaving loyal customers with a mix of nostalgia and sadness. It was a packed house on a recent Saturday morning, as Fresno residents gathered to bid farewell to a local favorite.
Longtime customer Madelyn De La Cruz shared her heartfelt sentiments, saying, "We've been coming here for a very long time, and it's very special to us, so we wanted to come and have our last meal here." She and her friends have been enjoying Bennaddiction since 2013, when owner James Caples first started with a food truck in Downtown Fresno.
From its humble beginnings as a passion project, Bennaddiction blossomed into a cherished breakfast destination, even earning a feature on the 'Dine and Dish' series in 2022. Caples expressed his sadness, stating, "I've built a really strong community of regulars and followers who love what we do here, and I'm sad that we're not gonna see them anymore." He emphasized that while he loved his food, especially his eggs Benedict and pancakes, it was always about the people.
For De La Cruz, the unique culture of Bennaddiction set it apart. "We have breakfast places, we have lots of chains, things like that, but this was just something that felt very homegrown Fresno," she explained.
But here's where it gets controversial... Bennaddiction faced significant challenges. Caples cited the sudden closure of their original location in 2023, coupled with rising costs and the impact of a government shutdown, as contributing factors to their financial struggles. He shared that he stopped paying himself, relying on tips to keep the business afloat.
Inflation played a significant role. The ABC30 Price Tracker revealed that bacon prices in Fresno rose from $5.63 per pound in 2016 to $7.29. Egg prices also increased, going from $2.33 to $3.49. By October 2025, sales had plummeted by 25% compared to the previous year, leaving them nearly $800,000 in debt.
Caples admitted, "It just got to a point where I'm just too tired to keep doing it, so we're gonna find a nice, peaceful job for a while."
And this is the part most people miss... Before closing, Caples offered his loyal customers a chance to take a piece of Bennaddiction home, announcing that they would be selling their mugs through a bid offer. As Caples reflected, "It's hard, it's 13 years of your life, it's hard." The last day to enjoy breakfast at Bennaddiction was Monday, January 19.
