In a surprising turn of events, Vines Bar in Derby has shut its doors just one month after making a much-anticipated comeback. A notice announcing the termination of the lease was prominently displayed on the door on January 16, 2026, formally instructing the establishment to vacate the premises immediately.
This closure follows the bar's reopening in December 2025, which had been eagerly awaited after it closed under a different ownership in late 2024. Paul Keenan, who is also the proprietor of Hairy Dog located on Becket Street, invested significantly in renovations over the summer, aiming to revitalize Vines and bring back live music—a cherished aspect of the bar’s history since it opened in the 1980s. Many locals viewed this revival as a beacon of hope, signaling a return to the vibrant nightlife that Derby used to boast.
The official notice on the door, addressed to Mr. Keenan, stated: "This notice is to formally advise that your lease for the above-noted premises has been terminated effective today, 16 January 2026. You are required to vacate and deliver possession of the premises immediately, in accordance with the terms of your lease and applicable law. If you have already vacated the premises, please disregard this notice." The message concluded with directions regarding the return of keys and other final arrangements.
Following the posting of this closure notice, Derbyshire Live reached out to Mr. Keenan, who confirmed the closure of Vines but opted not to provide any further comments at that time. This unexpected shutdown has stirred emotions among patrons, reminiscent of the sadness expressed when the bar first closed in October 2024.
