Recent reports from AMR indicate that there has been an astonishing 60% increase in flu-related emergency calls in DeKalb County over the last few weeks, mirroring a concerning trend seen across the state and the nation as a whole.
According to data provided by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Georgia is currently experiencing exceptionally high levels of flu activity, with hospitalizations across the country on the rise.
Dr. Gerad Troutman, who serves as the Associate Chief Medical Officer at AMR, pointed out that while many individuals who contract the flu can effectively manage their symptoms at home, it’s imperative for residents to stay alert. "Most flu cases can be managed with rest, hydration, and over-the-counter medication," Troutman remarked. "However, we are witnessing an uptick in more severe cases, so it’s crucial for people to seek medical help if their symptoms become severe or deteriorate rapidly, particularly among older adults, young children, and those with weakened immune systems."
When Should You Seek Emergency Medical Assistance?
AMR provides clear advice: residents should call 911 or seek immediate medical care if they experience any of the following symptoms:
- Difficulty breathing or shortness of breath.
- Persistent chest pain or pressure.
- Sudden dizziness, confusion, or extreme weakness.
- Severe or prolonged vomiting.
