A chilling prospect looms for Haitian immigrants in Ohio, as the Trump administration gears up for immigration enforcement operations that could commence as early as next week. The target: a community of approximately 12,000 to 15,000 Haitians in Springfield, Ohio, who have lived under the shadow of fear since the 2024 presidential election.
The temporary protected status (TPS) for Haiti, which has sheltered over 330,000 immigrants, is set to expire on February 3rd. This decision, made by Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Secretary Kristi Noem, has left Haitian immigrants in a state of uncertainty and anxiety.
"The feeling has been of fear since after the presidential election," shares Viles Dorsainvil, Executive Director of the Haitian Support Center in Springfield. "As an immigrant community, it has been a constant fear for us."
Dorsainvil's organization is taking proactive measures, preparing legal and transportation services for immigrants who may be apprehensive about leaving their homes. They are also creating a video to guide immigrants on what to do if they are detained and separated from their children.
"We pray for the best but we are preparing for the worst," Dorsainvil said, reflecting the community's resilience in the face of potential adversity.
The situation in Ohio echoes the controversial Minnesota operation, where DHS targeted the Somali immigrant community for immigration enforcement actions. Last week, several hundred federal immigration agents descended upon Maine, arresting Somali immigrants and others. DHS claimed to have targeted "egregious criminal alien offenders," but the operation sparked widespread criticism and debate.
Republican Senator Susan Collins of Maine intervened, negotiating an end to the surge with DHS. However, when asked about a potential drawdown, a DHS spokesperson stated, "the department will continue to enforce the law across the country."
The future of Haitian immigrants in Ohio remains uncertain, with DHS and local authorities remaining tight-lipped about their plans. As the community braces for potential enforcement actions, the question arises: Will Ohio become the next battleground in the nation's immigration debate?
