John Lewis, the UK's largest employee-owned business, has made a strategic shift away from homebuilding and management, citing a fundamental change in economic conditions as the reason. This decision comes as a surprise to many, as the company had previously announced bold plans to build 10,000 rental homes five years ago, aiming to generate 40% of its profits from outside retail by 2030. White was replaced by Jason Tarry, a former Tesco executive, in September 2024. The Association for Rental Living's chief executive, Brendan Geraghty, expressed disappointment, stating that John Lewis brought something genuinely different to rental living, including a trusted consumer brand and a long-term commitment to quality. However, a John Lewis Partnership spokesperson defended the decision, citing a very different financial environment and the need to refocus on its core retail brands.
