Joe Torres, a resident near Rittiman Road, has been at the forefront of this advocacy. He noticed a peculiar, foul-smelling water stream that seemed to originate from a drain behind his home. Torres and his neighbor, Henry Nunez, traced the water's path, leading them to believe it was connected to the Sola Apartments.
The San Antonio Water System (SAWS) confirmed their suspicions, identifying a plumbing project at the apartments as the potential source of the leak. The sewage water, according to Torres, collects at the intersection of Myrna Drive and Melton Drive, posing a significant health risk to the residents.
Robert Lopez, another neighbor, expressed his worries about the contaminated water seeping into his backyard, causing visible soil saturation. Despite the cleanup efforts by SAWS crews using vacuum trucks, the water returned shortly after, indicating a recurring problem.
The residents are concerned that the apartment complex's management is not taking adequate responsibility. They believe warning signs should have been posted to inform the community about the potential health hazards. Torres, driven by the health risks, took matters into his own hands by creating and posting signs that clearly marked the area as a biohazard.
The financial burden of the cleanup is another point of contention. Torres mentioned that homeowners often bear the cost, which is unjust according to Lopez, who emphasizes that he did not contribute to the problem. The neighbors are awaiting code compliance findings to determine the next steps and the responsibility for the leak's resolution.
