Flick’s men had mounted a remarkable second-half resurgence, winning the night 3-0 but falling short of forcing extra time.
When asked later what he told Flick, Simeone said he offered congratulations and praised Barcelona’s performance. “He was giving me his read on certain moments from the match, and I told him they played brilliantly. I hope we can meet again in the Champions League quarterfinals so we can compete at our best,” he stated.
Reflecting on the game, Simeone described Atletico’s 3-0 stretch as a sign of their identity: “Today, when the score was 3-0, I thought, ‘This is Atleti.’ Pedri, Balde, and Bernal all put in tremendous effort. Maintaining the intensity from the first half was tough. Giménez’s introduction brought a sense of maturity. That maturity is what a team needs.”
