For communities like Westmoreland County, where Spirit Airlines is the sole carrier at Arnold Palmer Regional Airport, the airline's struggles have significant local implications. Passenger traffic at this airport in 2025 plummeted to its lowest point since 2011. A mere 119,379 passengers traveled through the airport last year to just three destinations, marking the fewest number of travelers since Spirit began commercial service there in 2011. Despite a $22 million terminal expansion project currently underway, airport officials have been unsuccessful in attracting an additional airline to fill the void.

Spirit also maintains a presence at Pittsburgh International Airport. The budget airline initially filed for bankruptcy protection in August, not long after completing a previous Chapter 11 reorganization. At that time, CEO Dave Davis explained that the prior filing focused on reducing debt and securing capital. However, after exiting that process in March, it became evident that "much more work [was] to be done and many more tools [were] available to best position Spirit for the future."

Following the announcement of its second bankruptcy filing within a year, the Florida-based company swiftly revealed plans to suspend operations in approximately a dozen U.S. cities and furlough 1,800 flight attendants. These actions followed similar furloughs and job cuts that occurred even before the airline's initial bankruptcy filing.
