The Blu-ray charts are buzzing with excitement this week, as a long-awaited sequel takes the top spot! TRON: Ares, the latest installment in the TRON franchise, has stormed the charts, despite its delayed release and mixed critical reception. But here's the twist: it's dominating the sales, leaving fans and industry analysts intrigued.
TRON: Ares, a Walt Disney production, debuted at number one on the Blu-ray, packaged media, and UHD charts for the week ending January 10th. This comes as a surprise to some, considering the film's challenging journey to the screen. The sequel to the cult classic TRON and its follow-up, TRON: Legacy, faced production delays and a modest box office performance, earning $73 million domestically and $142 million globally against a substantial budget. However, its home video release has been a different story.
With a strong HD share of 78% and an impressive 54% of units sold in the 4K UHD format, TRON: Ares has captivated home viewers. This success is a testament to the film's visual appeal and the enduring popularity of the TRON universe. And it's not just the top spot; TRON: Ares has left a significant gap between itself and the runner-up, Superman (2025), which sold 22% fewer Blu-ray units, despite its own box office success.
Speaking of Superman, the Warner Bros. release secured second place on all three charts. The film, a modern take on the iconic DC character, enjoyed a strong box office run, but its Blu-ray sales couldn't quite match TRON: Ares. Superman had an HD share of 88%, with 76% of units sold in 4K UHD, a format that seems to be gaining traction with consumers.
The third spot on the charts went to a remastered classic, Dogma (1999). This Kevin Smith film, initially released on Blu-ray in 2008, was out of print for a while before Lionsgate gave it new life with a 4K UHD edition. The remastered release, complete with enhanced audio and visuals, sold 18% as many units as TRON: Ares, with a remarkable 100% HD share and all units sold in the 4K UHD format.
Arrow Video's Under Siege (1992) took fourth place on the Blu-ray and UHD charts. This remastered release, sourced from a new 4K master, offers a cinematic experience with enhanced audio and video options. It sold 15% as many units as the top seller, with a near-perfect HD share and almost all units sold in 4K UHD.
The charts also welcomed a new release, Bullet in the Head, which debuted at number 11 on the Blu-ray chart. This week's top sellers showcase a mix of new releases and remastered classics, with 4K UHD formats gaining traction. But the big question is, will TRON: Ares maintain its chart dominance, or will it be a one-hit wonder? And what does this say about the future of home media and the evolving preferences of movie enthusiasts?
Comment below: Do you think the success of TRON: Ares on home media is a fluke, or does it indicate a shift in how we consume movies? Are you a fan of the TRON franchise, and if so, what drew you to it?
